They do a black non setting sealant that is used on roofs, and also one the old cast iron down pipes. I think this is one of those jobs where putting things back together will be easier than taking them apart. I have taken several pictures throughout and have taken mental notes of what tools to use where. I will start a new thread describing the process in the next few weeks or so. I have removed everything, thankfully without breaking anything. It was a difficult job and there were times when I felt like I was destroying my car, which aside from the leak and shelf stains, is in pretty good condition, a point car.
Sealants maybe based on Silicone – and has a proven long life and is unaffected by UV or extremes of weather or temperature. Typically, sealants are used to close small openings that are difficult to shut with other materials, such as concrete, drywall, etc. Desirable properties of sealants include insolubility, corrosion resistance, and adhesion. Uses of sealants vary widely and sealants are used in many industries, for example, construction, automotive and aerospace industries. Sealants, despite not having great strength, convey a number of properties. They seal top structures to the substrate, and are particularly effective in waterproofing processes by keeping moisture out the components in which they are used.
